Lehrhaus 360| Bridging Past and Future: The Bay Area Jewish Community

Feb 12, 2012 @ 2:30 am - 9:00 am

This conference offers a panoramic perspective on the history of the Bay Area Jewish community from the Gold Rush to the present and in-depth perspectives through workshops and a dramatic monologue.

The Lehrhaus 360 event is dedicated to the memory of the Judah L. Magnes Museum’s visionary co-founder, Seymour Fromer (1922-2009), and will include tributes by some of the many artists, scholars, filmmakers, and museum curators whom he mentored for almost half a century.

Keynote Address: Fred Rosenbaum
“Controversies That Shook the Jewish Community” will examine pivotal issues in different periods. Some of these seem so remote or decidedly settled by history that it is hard to fathom the vigor of the debate at the time. Others continue to animate the most challenging discussions in our community today.

Period Panels – a bird’s eye view of major issues in three key areas:

  • From the Gold Rush to the Earthquake: The Pioneer Era
  • War, the Holocaust and the Birth of Israel: Cataclysms
  • From the 60s to the Present: Creativity, Dissent and a Changing Jewish Identity

Charlie Varon
will deliver a dramatic monologue, bringing to life the Bay Area Jewish community’s rich history of cultural creativity.

In-depth discussions on each period with scholars and experts

Magnes Director Alla Effimova will offer tours of the museum before the opening session (10:30 am) and during the workshops.

More details about the conference will be available this fall. This conference is followed by a unique event on February 26 in Palo Alto, Where Are We Heading: Voices in Our Community Imagining What’s Next.

$25 pre-registration (includes lunch); $35 at the door
There will be a vegetarian boxed lunch for those who register in advance. Paying at the door does not guarantee lunch.
