The Magnes Collection is currently processing the Roman Vishniac Archive. Materials from the archive are not yet available.
The Magnes provides a number of ways to access resources.
Magnes holdings reside in two locations: The Magnes building at 2121 Allston Way in downtown Berkeley and The Bancroft Library on the UC Berkeley campus.
Research Inquiries and Access
Researchers are encouraged to make full use of this website, as well as the following online tools:
- The Magnes database with detailed descriptions and images of thousands of collection items
- A list of Western Jewish Americana archival holdings on the Magnes OCLC WorldCat
- Descriptions in the Western Jewish Americana archives for many of the holdings
- Images available on Flickr

- Information on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter
- The search function in the website’s top bar.

Permission to use Magnes Images
Taube Family Arthur Szyk Collection
The Magnes only grants licenses for images of artworks that are part of the Taube Family Arthur Szyk Collection at the Magnes itself. For an entire list of Szyk works in the holdings, please search the Magnes database by entering the collection’s accession root number 2017.5.1 in the Identifying numbers search field.
Please send an email that includes title, accession number, reason for the request, and details about the expected usage to magnesrights@berkeley.edu.
Roman Vishniac Archive
The Roman Vishniac Archive is currently undergoing a comprehensive inventory. Permission requests will be considered after the inventory is complete.
