Now open on Sundays!

The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life, at the University of California, Berkeley, is adding Sunday museum hours to the schedule beginning October 8, 2023. 

“This summer my colleagues and I had the pleasure and privilege to meet with many friends of The Magnes through our Community Conversations series.” said Hannah Weisman, Executive Director of The Magnes. “One message we heard loud and clear was that the community would like more access to the museum’s collections!”

In response to this input, The Magnes is expanding open hours. The museum is now open four days each week, with weekend hours on Sundays and evening hours on Thursdays.

With additional hours and free admission, we look forward to welcoming Bay Area residents, tourists, and students, along with UC Berkeley parents and alumni to the museum and our exhibitions that feature The Magnes’s own collections.

The galleries will be open during the University of California, Berkeley’s Fall 2023 semester Tuesday, Wednesdays, and Sundays from 11am to 4pm, along with Thursdays from 11am to 7pm. 

The Magnes is conveniently located at 2121 Allston Way, just steps away from the Downtown Berkeley BART station and adjacent to the westside of the UC Berkeley campus.

To kick-off our Sunday hours and in celebration of UC Berkeley’s Alumni and Parents Weekend at Homecoming, The Magnes will be hosting a special Open House on October 8th between 11am and 4pm. We invite you to stop by, enjoy some light refreshments, and view the current exhibitions.

The Magnes’s newest exhibition, Cities and Wars: Roman Vishniac in Berlin and Jerusalem 1947/1967, shares previously unseen photographs from the Roman Vishniac Archive. Curated by Francesco Spagnolo, it brings together haunting images of two cities devastated by war and the timid resurgence of urban life amongst the rubble.

Other exhibitions currently on display include the retrospective, Time Capsules. The Magnes: 10 Years at UC Berkeley, and An Archive of Archives: Roman Vishniac’s Exhibition History | New York, 1971-72.
