PopUp Exhibition | Daniel Fisher on Biblical Lives

Daniel Fisher (Magnes Graduate Fellow and PhD Candidate, Near Eastern Studies) specializes in the Hebrew Bible and its early reception history. At the Magnes, Daniel is working with Dr. Francesco Spagnolo to curate ‘Biblical Lives,’ an exhibition to open in fall 2015 highlighting materials from the collection that empowered Jews across history to engage with the Bible — to live with the sacred text and to model their lives on its vision for Israel. Daniel’s dissertation research explores the ways biblical and early Jewish writers remember the Ark of the Covenant, reimagining, claiming, and questing after the Ark, while negotiating their groups’ identities in relation to the biblical past. Daniel will speak about three objects from the collection that will be a part of ‘Biblical Lives,’ illustrating the many — and often surprising — ways that Jews have made and used objects to connect with the Bible. These objects include a New Year’s card from Germany, a modern mezuzah from California, and a Hanukkah lamp made in a German DP camp — though quite different, each in its own way enabled Jews to build Biblical lives around the world and across history.
About the PopUp Exhibition Series
Each week, UC Berkeley faculty and students, visiting artists and other notable guests present brief lectures focused on selected treasures from the The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life. One speaker and one object at the time, these “flash” exhibitions include the opportunity to view the art and artifacts discussed intimately and up close.
