THE AMERICAN JEWISH EXPERIENCE SPEAKER SERIES
LIANA FINCK ON “THE BINTEL BRIEF”
“Liana Finck talks about her graphic novel, adapted from letters written to the Yiddish daily Forward newspaper’s popular advice column in the early 1900s.” The column documented the economic, social, and personal tribulations of Jewish newcomers to America. Finck’s book was described in the New York Times as “an invaluable sooty window onto life on the Lower East Side….” and her illustrations on NPR’s “Fresh Air” as “intensify[ing] the emotional resonance of these letters, invoking the buoyant magic of Marc Chagall…”
Finck graduated from Cooper Union and is a recipient of a Six Points Fellowship for Emerging Jewish Artists. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Forward, Lilith, Tablet, and Slate. A Bintel Brief is her first book.
