As a museum dedicated to advancing knowledge of Jewish cultures and experiences, the moments of engagement and discovery this past year have reminded us of the power of The Magnes’s collections to bring people together.
Over the summer, Executive Director Hannah Weisman hosted a series of community conversations, providing an opportunity to introduce herself and better understand the broad range of memories, perspectives, and ideas the collection inspires.
As a museum within UC Berkeley, the Magnes has nurtured collaboration and engagement with students, faculty, and staff across academic disciplines to support research, teaching, and learning with one of the world’s preeminent Jewish collections.
Stepping into the position in December of 2022, Executive Director Hannah Weisman has spent her first year building a framework for the future of the Magnes — initiating new strategic priorities, developing innovative programming, strengthening community relationships, and growing the Magnes team.
Curated by Francesco Spagnolo with image research support by Undergraduate Curatorial Assistant Phil Iweda, Cities and Wars: Roman Vishniac in Berlin and Jerusalem 1947/1967 is the first new exhibition from the Roman Vishniac Archive, combining two previously unseen sets of images and centering on the topic of “home.”
From the Jewish fashion industry to Anne Frank, hideout architecture to post-war cities, and Shakespeare to Yiddish song, 2023 brought 16 programs to the Magnes, engaging community members, campus partners, teens, and families alike.
With expanded public hours, curator-led group tours, a traveling exhibition, academic retreats, and class visits, the diverse holdings of the collection provide engaging connection to art and life across the Jewish Diaspora.
With your engagement, generosity, and ongoing support, 2023 has been a year filled with exciting programs and exhibitions, renewed and expanded community engagement, and insightful research and scholarship with the museum, archive, and library collections.
