Keren T. Friedman collection on Jewish life in Djerba, Tunisia

The collection, which was donated to The Magnes in 2011, includes objects collected and photographs taken in Djerba, Tunisia by Keren T. Friedman.

After training as an anthropologist at UCLA, Friedman began studying the Jewish community in Djerba after traveling there for the first time in 1973. She collected objects documenting ritual and everyday life, and took extensive photographic documentation of the community. Her photographs taken in Djerba were featured in an exhibition at the former Judah L. Magnes Museum in 1987, and three of them are included in The Magnes Collection. Items from Ms. Friedman’s collection have been previously displayed at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles.
