Wolfsohn (Bertram) papers, 1933-1942.

Bertram Wolfsohn was a president of B’nai B’rith San Francisco Lodge, No. 21. In his professional life, he worked as a dentist. His uncle, Richard E. Gutstadt, was the national director and secretary of the Anti-Defamation League.

Contains two letters (1933 and 1937) sent by Richard E. Gutstadt to his nephew, Bertram Wolfsohn, about prevailing antisemitism; a copy of a proposal Wolfsohn wrote and sent to the leaders of B’nai B’rith, entitled “Action designs for present day B’nai B’rith activity” (1944); a B’nai B’rith bulletin published by San Francisco Lodge No. 21 (Sept. 1942), when Wolfsohn was president of the lodge (which has an article written by Wolfsohn and one written by Gutstadt entitled “The War on hate … America lashes back;” a copy of an antisemitic speech that Rep. Louis T. McFadden of Pennsylvania delivered in the U.S. Congress on 29 May 1933 (reprinted in the Congressional Record); and a reprint of an antisemitic article from the 3 June 1933 issue of Liberation magazine entitled, “Americans, get ready to save your country from chaos.”
