Levitin (Sonia) papers, 1968-1971

Born in Berlin as Sonia Wolff, Levitin immigrated to the U.S. and lived in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Moraga, Calif. She is the author of “Journey to America”, which was based on her family’s escape from Nazi Germany. The book received many awards, including one from the Jewish Book Council of America for outstanding Jewish juvenile book of the year for 1970. She also is a columnist, educator, and founder of the Moraga Historical Society and is married to Lloyd Levitin.

The collection consists of manuscript and galley proofs of Levitin’s writings; correspondence; reviews; articles; an account of Levitin’s mother, Mrs. Helene Wolff, that also describes the family’s ordeal, including a lengthy separation before the family was reunited in the U.S.; and an oral history of Levitin discussing her work and family history.
