The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life is excited to reopen our doors with limited capacity. For the Fall semester, beginning September 1, 2021, The Magnes will be open "by appointment only" on Wednesdays, 11:00 am - 4:00 pm.

Research Hours / Florence Helzel Collection Study

Appointments to view select holdings for research or other academic or educational purposes may be made two weeks in advance of intended use.

The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life is located at 2121 Allston Way in downtown Berkeley, just outside the UC Berkeley Campus, within walking distance from BART and several parking facilities.

The Downtown Berkeley BART station is located just around the block from The Magnes, on Shattuck Avenue between Allston Way and Addison Street. 



The following bus lines stop in Downtown Berkeley:

AC Transit Bus lines including 6, 7, 18, 51B, 52, 65, 67, 79, 88, 800, 851, and F

Bear Transit: C, P, RFS


FROM I-80 (San Francisco and Marin)
Take the University Ave. exit in Berkeley
Turn right on University and continue 0.9 miles
Turn right on Shattuck Ave.
Turn left on Allston Way.

Take Exit 5B, merge onto CA-13 N to Berkeley.
Head down Tunnel Road; continue onto Ashby.
Turn right onto Shattuck; continue for 1 mile.
Take a right onto Allston Way.


Parking is available at Oxford Garage, directly across the street. Enter on 2161 at Kittredge Street between Oxford and Shattuck. There are many other off-campus parking options near The Magnes, listed on this page



Venue Rental

Beginning in January 2022, The Magnes will offer designated spaces available for private and coporate events, during and after public hours. Located inside The Magnes Collection building, the  main auditorium features a large space for special events, corporate functions, banquets, and cultural performances. It includes a raised theatrical stage at one end, providing ample room for musicians or a head table, and is equipped with a sound system, projector, and movie screen for performances or symposiums. The conference room and seminar rooms are ideal for classes, workshops, and meetings. Contact for more information
