The Magnes Celebrates the Opening of “From Mendelssohn To Mendelssohn”

February 9, 2016

The Magnes held its opening night reception of From Mendelssohn To Mendelssohn: German-Jewish Encounters in Art, Music and Material Culture on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2016. The opening was attended by more than 300 Magnes supporters, community members and students and professors from the University of California, Berkeley.

Guests enjoyed music by Felix Mendelssohn, which was performed by Roger Moseley (Erard Grand Piano, London, 1854), Hrabba Atladottir (violin), and Hannah Addario-Berry (cello). Following the main performance, Cal students and professors performed on a Wieck Grand Piano (Dresden, ca. 1860) in the gallery, creating an intimate, salon-like setting. Both pianos are on loan from the Department of Music.

The exhibition will be on display through June 2, 2016, and is a collaboration with the Office of the Dean of Arts and Humanities, the Departments of Music and History, and The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life at the University of California, Berkeley.
